Growing a Greener Future: Darwin Youth Perspectives

Wednesday, June 25, 2025 | 08:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Imagine growing up in a world shaped by multiple crises – climate change, biodiversity loss, and rising inequality, now reimagine that world for one where our children are empowered to shape their own futures; a world where climate action, biodiversity and equality create a thriving world for all. A recent Lancet study found that over half of young people globally feel anxious, sad, or powerless about their current worldviews. But, here's the thing: what if we could flip that anxiety into hope and action?

Here in Darwin, young Territorians are doing just that!

The Landcare NT BioEd team and Wageningen University & Research are excited to participate in the ESP11 conference in Darwin, showcasing the innovative work of young people in addressing local environmental issues. Our interactive climate resilience workshop will bring together students from local schools to demonstrate their understanding of environmental challenges and co-create their vision for a future where nature helps keep us safe, happy, and thriving.

Exploring the power of nature

Through playful, creative teamwork, our young participants will explore how trees, water, and green spaces can become the foundation of a nature-based future — sparking innovation, creating jobs, and building resilience. By harnessing the power of nature, they will reimagine their world and develop a vision for a more sustainable tomorrow.

From anxiety to action

The BioEd workshop aims to transform the anxiousness felt by youth about biodiversity loss and climate crises into a positive force for change. By empowering young people to take ownership of their environment, we can build a brighter future for all. Their fresh ideas will challenge us to see nature not as a constraint, but as a catalyst for economic renewal and community well-being.

Share the Vision

This workshop, hosted by Landcare NT and Wageningen University & Research, is part of a broader biodiversity education initiative to empower young people and amplify youth voices as environment leaders, harnessing innovative, nature-based solutions to shape a resilient, sustainable future.

Join us and be inspired — the next generation has something powerful to say and they are asking us - "Are you ready to move your region forward in the transformation toward climate resilience with nature?" Stay tuned for approaches and tools developed through the NBRACER project (Nature-Based Solutions for Atlantic Regional Climate Resilience), supporting regions across Europe — and beyond — in their transformation journey.
